2 USA Made Blacksmith Hand-Forged Steel Storm Strap Hinges for Shutters/Doors/Gates, 6 Sizes 8” to 20”
This listing is for a set of two (2) heavy door or shutter storm strap hinges handcrafted by the blacksmiths of Brandywine Valley Forge in Royersford, Pennsylvania.
These new, American made storm strap hinges are being offered in six (6) sizes from 8” to 20”.  Made from 3/16” thick milled steel, the Model No. 705 strap hinges are rolled, punched and offset to function as a more durable and functional solution than a light-weight cut-out hinge in the same price range.
The ½” barrel pin hole accommodates ½” hinge pins either 1 ½” tall for the ‘N’ series or 2” tall for the ‘W’ series.  These hand-forged exterior hinges are finished with a semi-gloss black electro-deposition coating, an automotive industrial finish used on under-car parts like alternator brackets and trailer hitches – metal pieces that are subjected to the harshest environments.  Properly installed, one pair of hinges & pintles from Brandywine Valley Forge will comfortably hang shutters, gates, and doors up to about 75 lbs. (a third can be added for heavier doors).  The Brandywine Forge line of storm strap hinge hardware is top-quality, American-made, hand-forged, inspired by the best original examples from European & American homes.

    From Brandywine Valley Forge…
Strap hinge length is measured as that portion of the hinge that actually lays on the shutter or door. With an offset shutter hinge, for example, we consider the length of the hinge the distance from the edge of the shutter where the hinge mounts to the end of the hinge. The hinge offset bend generally falls on the edge of the shutter, so the hinge length is from the bend to the end. If you have a zero offset
Hole placement. All of the weight of the shutter is born between the pintle pin and the first fastener on the hinge. We position our first hinge fastener hole 1 ¼” from the hinge offset bend. The first fastener then would fall on the mid-line of a 2 ½” stile (which seems most common). There’s nothing structural about it (as long as the fastener hole falls on the shutter), but it looks best when the fastener is centered on the vertical stile. All of our strap hinge fastener holes are 9/32” to accommodate finish inside the holes plus a ¼” diameter fastener.
Our standard heavy strap hinges are made of 3/16” thick mild steel. The reason is simple; we’ve never seen a hinge made of this heavy material fail. While we’ve seen lots of 1/8” thick hinges fail, there are thousands of others that have functioned perfectly well. It’s not just about weight of material – the failures we see often stem from design flaws…… insufficient clearance between hinge pin and barrel encourages rust. Hinges and pintles rust together, along comes Mr. Painter who pulls the shutter open and the hinges bend or crack. They weren’t too light to hang the shutters; they just couldn’t stand the leverage and break the rust. We account for such with our lighter hinges – we’d never sell hinges that wouldn’t function properly without failure.
We provide this listing to give you an idea of what you’re buying from us and as a gauge when other makers/vendors refer to metal thickness in gauge (GA.). If they don’t mention hinge thickness, ask. Skimping on material is how a lot of imported stuff gets so cheap.
