Dar al-Mulk was the ‘Palace of the Caliph’, therefore this coin was struck inside the palace of Mahmud Shah II
The Tughlag Dynasty began in 1321 when Ghazi Malik ascended the Persian throne under the name of Ghiyas ud Din Tughluq. The empire grew under his son, Muhammad bin Tughlaq but he was notorious for his bad decisions in both moving the capital from Delhi to Daulatabad and for introducing copper coins that were too easily faked. After he died, his successor was on the throne for less than a month when he was killed by Muhammad’s cousin, Feroz Shah Tughlaq, who proved to be a weak ruler with an inept army. In 1398, Tamerlane invaded and defeated all four Tughlag armies and Mahmud fled, leaving Delhi to be plundered, sacrificing 100,000 citizens.
Important events in the year 1398: Teutonic Knights conquer Gotland; Martin I crusades against Moors in North Africa; Stecknitz Canal built in North Germany (oldest surviving waterway); Scottish explorer Henry I Sinclair reaches North America (by some accounts);
Births: Xuande Emperor of China, Gutenberg;
Deaths: Emperor Suko of Japan, Hongwu Emperor of China, James I of Cyprus
